Tree Work Shaped by Snow, Ice and Old Neighborhoods
Tree service in Utica has to plan for winter. The city averages about 102 inches of snow a year, with lake-effect snow off Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, and January lows that average below 13 degrees. Wet snow and freezing rain add weight to every branch, and a limb that looks fine in October can split in February. Most of our work in Utica comes back to three questions: is the tree sound, is it too close to something that matters, and how do we get it down or cut back safely on a lot where there is little room to work?
Ice storms and heavy snow
Ice is harder on trees than wind alone. After the March 1991 ice storm in Rochester, a study of that city's street trees found that about one in five lost half or more of its live crown, with silver maple and green ash among the species hit harder than their numbers would predict, and sugar maple and northern red oak among those that held up best. Tree size, branch angle, weak crotches and old decay all made damage more likely. That matches what homeowners see here: long, heavy limbs over roofs, multi-trunk trees with tight V-shaped forks, and trees with old wounds are the ones that come apart. Thinning and shortening those limbs before winter costs far less than cleaning up after one fails.
Emerald ash borer
Emerald ash borer was first found in New York in 2009, and the New York State DEC now reports it in every county except Hamilton and Lewis, which includes Oneida and Herkimer counties. The larvae feed under the bark, and once a tree is infested, most ash trees die within two to four years. Signs include woodpeckers stripping outer bark so the trunk looks pale, thinning and dying branches at the top, D-shaped exit holes and S-shaped tunnels under loose bark. DEC notes that an infested tree does not have to come down unless it could fall and cause harm, for example onto a house or a road, and that insecticide treatment is an option for some trees. Dead ash turns brittle, so a removal that is routine while a tree is alive can become harder and riskier once it has been dead a few years.
Mature trees on older lots
Much of Utica was built out a century ago. The city reached its peak population of about 101,700 in 1930, and neighborhoods from Corn Hill to the West and East sides still have older homes on narrow lots under tall, mature trees. Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. designed Memorial Parkway as a four-mile tree-lined boulevard. Big trees on small lots mean limbs over two or three properties, driveways too narrow for a bucket truck, and wires running through the canopy. We plan each job around that: limbs lowered on ropes instead of dropped, sections cut small enough to carry out, and work stopped near lines so the utility can handle them.
City trees and street trees
The City of Utica's tree FAQ says trees owned by the city are city property and may not be trimmed by anyone other than city staff unless a permit is obtained first; permits to have a city tree trimmed by a certified professional come through the Parks Department's Tree Maintenance Division. The city is not responsible for trees on private property. If the tree in question stands along the street, we will tell you before quoting whether it looks like a city tree, so you can check with the Parks Department first. Rules differ in each town and village around Utica, and we confirm what applies at your address.
What a typical estimate covers
- A walk around each tree to note species, lean, dead wood, cracks and decay
- A look at targets underneath: roof, garage, fence, driveway, neighbor's yard
- Overhead wires and whether the utility needs to be called first
- Access for climbers, ropes, a chipper or a bucket truck
- What happens to wood, chips, brush and the stump
- A written price for each tree, with nothing added without your approval
Where We Work
Utica is the center of our service area. From there we work across Oneida County, the Mohawk Valley and a little beyond: New Hartford, New York Mills, Yorkville and Whitesboro next to the city; Oriskany, Marcy and Rome to the northwest; Deerfield, Holland Patent, Remsen and Boonville to the north; Clinton, Sauquoit and Waterville to the south and southwest; Frankfort, Ilion, Mohawk, Herkimer and Little Falls down the river to the east; and Sherrill and Oneida to the west. The whole region gets long winters, so snow and ice damage and dying ash trees come up everywhere. What changes from place to place is who owns the trees along the road and what rules apply to cutting them, and each area page covers what we know about that place.

Common Questions
What do tree companies charge in Utica?
It depends mostly on the tree's height, how close it is to buildings or wires, and access. Homeyou's 2026 Utica figures put a medium tree removal at about $537 to $728 and pruning at about $375 to $525, with large trees over 60 feet around $1,000 or more. National guides from Angi and HomeGuide put most removals between about $200 and $2,000. We give a written price after seeing the tree.
Can I trim the tree in front of my house in Utica?
Not if it is a city tree. The City of Utica says trees it owns may not be trimmed by anyone other than city staff unless a permit is obtained first, through the Parks Department's Tree Maintenance Division. If you are not sure whether a street tree is yours, ask the city before anyone cuts it; we will tell you if it looks like a city tree when we visit.
Do I have to cut down an ash tree with emerald ash borer?
Not always. New York State DEC says an infested tree does not have to be removed unless it could fall and cause harm, such as onto a house or road, and that insecticide treatment is an option. Once infested, most ash trees die within two to four years, and dead ash becomes brittle. If an ash stands near your house, driveway or the street, it is worth deciding early.
When is the best time for tree trimming in Upstate New York?
For many deciduous trees, late winter while they are dormant works well: the branch structure is easy to see and wounds have the spring to start closing. Utica's own guidance suggests pruning trees that bloom before the end of May right after they flower, and removing dead or diseased wood as soon as you find it. Storm-damaged limbs should not wait for a season.
Can I keep the firewood from my tree?
Yes. We can leave the wood in rounds or cut to length, or haul it away. New York limits moving firewood of any species to within 50 miles of where it came from, which matters for ash wood in particular, so keep it local.
What should I ask any tree company before hiring?
Ask for a written quote that lists each tree, the cleanup and whether the stump is included. Ask for a current certificate of liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage sent straight from the insurer. If the job involves diagnosing disease or judging whether a tree is safe, ask whether an ISA Certified Arborist will look at it; you can verify that credential on the International Society of Arboriculture's website.
Who handles a tree on a power line?
The utility. Do not go near the tree or the wire, and call the power company. Utility crews may also trim trees that interfere with electric lines. Once the line is clear or de-energized, we can remove the rest of the tree and clean up.
